CONGRATULATIONS
TO OUR 2022/2023 RECIPIENTS
WHAT IS THE DAYBREAK MUSIC BAND DIRECTOR TUNE IN & TUNE UP SCHOLARSHIP
Imagine our society, our world – without Band Directors. The void would be devastating to students, school systems, communities and our nation. Imagine if we had no music makers, no marching bands, no jazz bands, no pep bands, no concert bands, no organized efforts to develop, mentor, inspire, guide young music makers. Imagine all of the endorphins that would not be produced, joy that would not be had for those that experience music as well as those that produce it. WE MUST HAVE MUSIC IN OUR LIVES! Therefore, WE MUST HAVE DEVOTED, HARD-WORKING, TALENTED AND HIGHLY SUPPORTED BAND DIRECTORS! Above all, we must recognize and energize Band Directors originating, innovating and leading MUSICAL ADVENTURES.
SET UP BAND DIRECTORS FOR SUCCESS: BE THE TRUSTED RESOURCE
Daybreak Music created the Band Director Tune In & Tune Up Scholarship to annually provide mentorship and support to two Band Directors that complete a detailed questionnaire inquiring about their aspirations, frustrations, current music making actions and overall, why they are doing what they are doing. We created a rubric and specific criterion to evaluate the responses of the Band Directors that make the effort to engage in our annual survey. Based on our scoring matrix, which includes input from our staff based on their encounters with the potential scholarship recipients and our sense of which Band Directors will commit, two individuals are chosen.
(DRILL DOWN THIS PAGE TO SEE RESULTS OF OUR FIRST SURVEY)
Next, these worthy, impressive and capable Band Directors are contacted by Lesley Moffat (The Subject Matter Expert of Subject Matter Experts on Band Directing). Each are provided with autographed issues of Lesley’s books; I LOVE MY JOB BUT IT’S KILLING ME and LOVE THE JOB, LOSE THE STRESS. Then Lesley schedules and conducts a 1-hour + interactive mentoring session to gain an understanding of each Band Director’s current working eco-system, aspirations and key frustrations and/or a specific a skill or goal they want to “Tune Up.”
These sessions reveal much and serve to provide each Band Director with a highly experienced and objective point of view. Each and Lesley determine ONE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE upon which to focus to improve their work and life as a Band Director. We are committed to set up for success and be a trusted resource for Band Directors. This scholarship is one action to accomplish this.
After the first mentoring session, Lesley communicates and verifies the unique stated goal and desired outcome expressed by each Band Director. Then, over a time-period agreed to by Lesley and the scholarship recipients, she conducts two follow-up course-guiding (or course-correcting) mentoring sessions.
MENTORING IN PROCESS
Currently, Lesley Moffat, Jeremy McClaine and Justin Dye have completed the first mentoring session. These were recorded and transcribed. THE DAYBREAK DISPATCH will be editing this content – keeping confidential that which should be kept confidential, but also, producing short-format motion features to share insights, tips, guidance and actions that the interviews revealed that can be meaningful and helpful to Band Directors that want to be helped.
